Energy Star is a government backed program that awards a star to household appliances, electronics, office equipment, and building materials that meet federal energy efficiency standards. If 1 in 10 American homes used Energy Star appliances, the benefit to the environment would be equivalent to planting 1.7 million acres of trees.

Jill King designed the flowing pattern on this globe by digitally manipulating images of hurricanes. She then produced the striking textural surface with colored sand. Finally, she added unique UV-light-absorbing, fluorescent sand to give off a spectacular glow at dusk and early nightfall. King hopes the efficiently glowing globe will convey that people can help conserve energy by purchasing energy-efficient products.
