Communicating science from a science perspective: Al Steinman, director Annis Water Resources Institute, Grand Valley State University
Dr. Steinman reflected on the scientist's duty to be clear when defining his work, for there can be billions of dollars at stake. Common problems scientists face when presenting policymakers, journalists and the public to their work:
- They present too much data
- There is too much jargon in their work
- To others' dismay, scientists don't like to make generalizations
However, he presented solutions to these common problems:
- Put extensive scientific data into context with historical evidence
- Use images instead of confusing words
- Provide information clearly and honestly without making unfair generalizations
