St Louis, Michigan

From Great Lakes Wiki

As the self-proclaimed "middle of the mitten", St. Louis has seen economic and cultural growth in the past 10 years. For years, it has struggled with the "Toxic Town" image perpetuated in the media due to the Pine River Superfund Site contamination.

Since the EPA moved in to clean up the site, city officials have worked to raise property values along the river and attract more residents. Though Mayor George Kubin expresses the need to maintain St. Louis' small-town feel, he also worries that younger generations are quick to move out and that the tourism industry will be non-existent in the summer months.

St. Louis is in Gratiot County. It contains no natural lakes, which is a unique quality for a Michigan county. It was founded by Joseph W. Clapp in 1853.

The city of St Louis maintains a detailed history of the town.
