Overview & Purpose

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is an agency of the United States Government created "to protect human health and the environment." The EPA was created by President Richard Nixon as a response to public demand for cleaner water, air, and land. The bill that created it was passed in July of 1970 and it began operating on December 2, 1970. It is led by its Administrator, who is appointed by the President of the United States. Although, the EPA is not a Cabinet agency, the Administrator generally has cabinet rank. The current (as of 2006) Administrator of the EPA is Stephen L. Johnson.
