Using Media on the Wiki

From Great Lakes Wiki

Pictures

Video From Youtube

To embed YouTube videos in the wiki, you need the ID code for the video which can be taken from the YouTube URL. So, if the URL is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HLQtr0RxQw

the ID would be 2HLQtr0RxQw.

For example, the code for embedding the above video looks like this:

<youtube>eFq1VEWdYrI</youtube>

Audio

The wiki has a built-in system for uploading audio files. You can upload them in any format, but mp3 is often a good idea, as it is easy for people to play back.

  • One you have the file on your computer, you can click the Upload File link on the left side of the page (the in toolbox section), or Special:Upload. On that page, note all of the copyright information.
  • Click on the Choose File button and select your file.
  • Give it a filename and a summary description. Select your license type and then click Upload file. This might take a while, as audio files tend to be somewhat large, so be patient.
  • To link to it, you could insert this code: [[Image:Petersen.mp3]] and it will look like this: Image:Petersen.mp3

Note that it calls it an image, even though it is not. This is just something about how it handles files, not actually an indication of its file type. On the page for the file, you will find a link that (in this case) says Petersen.mp3. That links directly to the file.

  • To directly link this file in an entry on the wiki, the code looks like this: [http://greatlakeswiki.org/images/8/84/Petersen.mp3 link to mp3] which produces a link that looks like this: link to mp3
