- Be respectful, informative and creative.
- Use the site to post stories, information, narratives and media relating to the Great Lakes.
- Use intelligence to refute opinions you disagree with- create supplementary content or post advice and comments on the discussion page.
- WHAT SHOULD I ADD? The list is endless. Some suggestions: Items that enhance general understanding of the Great Lakes basin. News about the lakes, political initiatives, beach closings, invasive species, community events (festivals, art fairs, boat races, important meetings etc.). To benefit the community please contribute material about the lakes. Whether it be just information or opinions it needs to be related to the lakes. Contributed articles should focus on new information, background information that is verifiable, or your unique personal experiences. If you think an article is too opinionated or disagree with a comment, whip up your own.
DO NOT ...
- Act in a condescending or aggressive manner.
- Maliciously vandalize other's work.
- Post material as fact unless it is widely agreed upon, if it is your opinion, let readers know that.
- Add objectionable material. It is highly unlikely that this would be considered, but please keep in mind we welcome all people to the site.
KNOW THAT...
- This site is only as good as its contributors.
- By putting content on this site you are allowing others to change it.
- Although it is not required, user accounts are a great way to create a Great Lakes community- and claim your work. To use someone else's account permission must be given, because activity on any account is entirely that user's responsibility. The Great Lakes Wiki holds the right to ban users and IP addresses if necessary.
- Credit should be given to those who create information and media. Cite borrowed material properly and get permission if it is not considered fair use (public information including that provided by the government). When uploading images please reference the source (even if it is you) in the space provided. Great Lakes Wiki reserves the right to remove content that is not properly cited, however we do not assume responsibility for material posted without permission. It is the user's responsibility to ensure that posted material is not protected including copyright, owner rights, privacy rights and publicity rights.
- If you add images and content to the site you have two options. You can retain the copyright or you can opt to allow the material to enter the public domain. If you own the content, you can reuse it. If the content enters the public domain, you can still reuse it but you also add to the online resources available to everyone. Great Lakes Wiki is a place to share information and content and does not assume responsibility for materials stolen from the site. We only work as a forum to post intellectual property and in no way work to protect it.
